Direct Vision Internal Urethrotomy

This procedure is appropriate for short urethral strictures.

A cystoscope is introduced into the urethra down to where the stricture is. The stricture is cut at different places (usually 5, 7 and 12 o’clock) until the urethra is wide open.

A Foley catheter is left for 3 days.

The first time this procedure is done, the success is around 70%.

The procedure is not very successful in treating recurrent strictures: <30% success rate.
